Rise Higher is a protect-the-balloon game rather than a game you steer. The balloon rises on its own and you never control it directly — you control the mouse, and what you do is clear the obstacles out of its path before it reaches them.
That inversion is what makes it tense. You are always working one screen ahead of a thing you cannot slow down, and the geometric obstacles come in two sizes, which changes how much time you need to deal with each one. Falling behind is not recoverable in the way a normal arcade game's mistake is.
There are diamonds and donuts to collect on the way up, a shield power-up for the moment you have not cleared something in time, and a shop selling balloon skins — a kitty, a panda, a moustache, polka dots and an ombre finish among them.
How to play Rise Higher?
Work top-down rather than clearing what is nearest the balloon, since the obstacle you can still reach comfortably is the one furthest away. Save the shield for a genuinely unwinnable moment instead of using it on a gap you could still clear by hand. Take diamonds and donuts only when the path above is already clear; a collectible that costs you an obstacle is a bad trade.
